Marooned / Self Imposed Exile

In this diptych I've made a study, once again, on the subject of isolation. People generally feel cut from "the world" for two basic reasons. One being abandonment, {Marooned} or some sense of permanent disconnect from others. An isolation not of their own making, or choice. The second is more voluntary, {Self Imposed Exile}. A need to be removed, or separate from the others, due to discomfort or anxiety with the world around them.

My angelic partner is certainly my marooned subject. Poised before a yet to be opened door, as her ship is clearly hemmed in.
Personally I fit into the latter category, hence the self portrait amongst the flotsam and jetsam of my battered ship.

We've all had times that we are not so proud of. Many of those moments can be found in our younger years, like, remember your first apartment? Well...

In 1995 I (quite deservedly so) was evicted from my first apt. When you are young, stereo wars and general mayhem is par for the course, and the neighbours are supposed to conform to YOUR way of life. AHHHHhhhhhhh, the silly freedom of it all.

Anyway, despite the tortured tenants, I discovered my home was also my studio, and I lived every moment of it. The unfortunate souls who took over my place, were left with this little gem, on the bedroom wall.

It's really an early classic, painted when I didn't paint. Drawings were all I did! I was just inspired late one night, had this picture in a book so, I picked up some Tremclad (no, really) and started painting...

Ok, I'm being self indulgent, but I was flicking through some old photos (remember those?) and found this snap. I remember when my brother saw the painting for the first time, and how it gave him goose bumps. I remember the experience of working and thinking in colour, not to mention waking up in the morning to find "her" on the wall at the foot of my bed. It's really the dawn of my acceptance of colour, and a realization that the black and white I currently worked exclusively in would one day...come to an end. Cobain would be next.

I'm glad I took this pic. I'm sorry to those who had to paint her over.
